AT MILTOPE

A conversation with Luca Bologna,

Director of Quality Assurance

BEHIND THE MISSION

Quality Isn’t a Final Check. It’s Part of the Process.

At Miltope, quality is built into every stage of the manufacturing process. From supplier management and incoming inspection to production controls, testing, and final acceptance, each step plays a role in delivering reliable products for demanding environments.

We sat down with Luca Bologna, Director of Quality Assurance, to take a closer look at Miltope’s approach to quality, the processes behind it, and why quality assurance is critical to supporting our customers and their missions.

ABOUT LUCA BOLOGNA

Behind that process is Luca Bologna, Director of Quality Assurance, a quality and operations executive with more than 25 years of experience leading quality management systems across the aerospace, defense, automotive, and high-volume manufacturing industries. An ASQ Certified Quality Engineer and Quality Auditor, Luca brings extensive experience with AS9100, ISO 9001, IATF 16949, FAA Part 21, FAA Part 145, and FAR/DFARS compliance.

Q&A WITH LUCA

How would you describe Miltope’s approach to quality?

Miltope takes a proactive approach to quality by identifying and eliminating risks before they become problems. Through poka-yoke error-proofing principles and FMEA-based risk avoidance and mitigation, we continually strengthen our Quality Management System and the processes behind our products.

The result is a mature quality system designed to support consistent product performance, low warranty rates, and high customer satisfaction

What standards and certifications guide Miltope’s quality system?

Miltope’s Quality Management System is certified to AS9100 and ISO 9001, providing a strong foundation for quality across our aerospace and defense operations.

Our capabilities also include FAA Part 21 certification for production and FAA Part 145 certification for our in-house product support and repair facility. Our repair operation also maintains EASA and UK Part 145 certifications to support the international requirements of our commercial customers.

How is quality built into the manufacturing process from the beginning?

Quality begins well before a product reaches the manufacturing floor.

Our poka-yoke, or error-proofing, mindset helps eliminate potential design and process risks while reducing opportunities for human error. Miltope’s engineering stage-gate process incorporates structured design reviews from initial development through production release.

Once a product enters manufacturing, our integrated MRP system provides monitoring and traceability throughout the build process, connecting manufacturing activity to the product bill of materials and helping ensure products are built correctly and consistently.

How does Miltope manage quality throughout its supply chain?

Supplier quality is an extension of our overall quality system. Miltope uses a structured process that includes initial supplier evaluation and approval, Production Part Approval Processes, quality clause flowdowns, ongoing performance monitoring, supplier scorecards, and receiving inspection controls.

Beyond these processes, we work to develop strong supplier relationships centered on continuous improvement and mutual success. The goal is repeatable, reliable supplier performance throughout the supply chain.

What role do testing and traceability play in ensuring product reliability?

Miltope products are designed to perform in some of the most demanding environments, making testing and traceability essential to product reliability.

Our approach to testing verifies that products meet the performance and durability expectations associated with the Miltope name, while traceability provides visibility throughout manufacturing. Together, these processes help support the high reliability and low warranty rates our customers have come to expect.

For decades, Miltope has built its reputation around rugged, dependable technology designed to support the Warfighter and other end users when reliable performance matters most.

BUILT FOR THE MISSION

Quality is part of every step.

Quality at Miltope is not limited to an inspection at the end of production. It is an integrated discipline spanning engineering, suppliers, manufacturing, testing, traceability, and product support.

That commitment helps ensure the systems leaving our facility are ready for the environments and missions they were designed to support.
